Translated from the Tahitian phrase, Mai Tai means "Out of this World." Trader Vic's first started making the rum-based cocktail in 1944 in Oakland, California and kicked off the tiki cocktail craze. The original recipe showcased the blend of rums but requires some unusual ingredients so one of the modernized recipes has been included.
The Classic Mai Tai
Ingredients:
-1 oz light rum
-1 oz dark rum
-1/2 oz lime juice
-1/2 oz orange curacao
-1/2 oz orgeat syrup
-Maraschino cherry for garnish
Preparation:
Mix all ingredients together in a shaker tin full of ice cubes then strain into a rocks glass half-filled with ice. Float the dark rum on top and garnish.
The Modern Mai Tai
Ingredients:
-1 oz light rum
-1/2 triple sec
-1/4 oz lime juice
-1 1/2 oz pineapple juice
-1 1/2 oz orange juice
-Dash of grenadine
-1/2 oz dark rum
-Maraschino cherry for garnish
Preparation:
Pour all ingredients except for dark rum into an ice-filled shaker and mix well. Strain into an old fashioned glass over ice and top with dark rum then garnish with the cherry.
